Yeah. So. I’m still sorting things out. But just so the blog doesn’t go dead for us, let me fill it with some content.
Hm. Content… content. I know I’ve got some rainy-day stuff packed away for just this sort of occasion. Oh! Here’s some French pop music!
Link (YouTube) |
Interesting thing about videos. I wouldn’t normally listen to music like this, but it’s the video that sells this for me. The joyful exuberance is infectious. And to be honest, if I could dance like this guy, you’d have to point a gun at me to get me to stop. Plus, I’ve never seen this particular trick of duplicating the same dance at different locations and intercutting them. It’s fun.
The Best of 2017
My picks for what was important, awesome, or worth talking about in 2017.
Good Robot Dev Blog
An ongoing series where I work on making a 2D action game from scratch.
Was it a Hack?
A big chunk of the internet went down in October of 2016. What happened? Was it a hack?
Dead or Alive 5 Last Round
I'm not surprised a fighting game has an absurd story. I just can't figure out why they bothered with the story at all.
Rage 2
The game was a dud, and I'm convinced a big part of that is due to the way the game leaned into its story. Its terrible, cringe-inducing story.
If the blog goes dead, that’s fine. Most of us like zombies anyway.
Braaaaaains!
BRIAAAANS!!!!
Reminds me of this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlfKdbWwruY
Which is totally smile-worthy.
Also the first thing I thought of, even before viewing the video, when I read the dance-in-different-locations bit :-P
Yeah, first thing I wondered at the “never seen…” line was, “You’ve never seen Where the Hell is Matt?”
Love WTHIM. But one regular guy doing a two-step dance is a pretty different visual experience from 1 pro dancer doing a complex dance involving jumps, flips, and environmental elements. Different enough that I look at this vid and say, “This is new.”
From the look of it I suspect they’re all but pros…
Anyhow, my right eyebrow is now conspicuously raised.
I don’t think the dancer’s a pro. He’s a comedian/actor it seems.
Got good control over his body though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aN8QiYq92os
Love it :)
There’s a joyously uncontrolled nature to a few of the moves that is either brilliantly choreographed or sloppily executed and I’m not expert enough to know which. The costume kills it for me – oh god, the but-wiggling in those pants, choke. But it’s definitely exuberant!
He starts out dancing so simply that at first I was puzzled by the “if I could dance like that” line, but after a couple minutes: “Ah, I see. Yeah.”
I was about to post this, only to find that someone else already had. There really ought to be a catchy term for this, like “I’ve been samuraied!”
I prove that expression.
You approve of?
I`ve been samuraied!
Though it`s unclear if he means a samurai stole his saying or if he was made a samurai. Or slashed by one.
I considered “I’ve been pirated!” (vs ninja’d), but I thought it might lead to lengthy debates about intellectual property.
So somebody downloaded you illegally?
Would people please stop tossing around terms like “illegal” when talking about copyright infringement, it’s a completely different issue, and besides, information wants to be free, and … :)
Information HATES your anthropomorphizing of it.
Uh, copyright infringement is illegal.
Whoops, too-hasty attempt to parody the pro-piracy side … There’s *some* term that always sets them off, though … maybe it’s using the term “stealing” for “downloading people’s stuff without paying for it”?
Counterpoint: Information wants to be free to charge what it wants, in a free market. It also wants to be free of slavery/minimum wages.
[/bitten troll lure] :p
Gotta say, Mumbles would be proud.
I’m sure Mumbles liked it before it became too mainstream. She couldn’t be bothered now. ;-)
:P I’m not the hipster in this family.
But, yes I did like them before they were cool. Shamus has pretty good taste, despite the fact that he keeps asking me if I know who Daft Punk is.
He’s just concerned about you. And rightfully so. How can you not know who Daft Punk is…
But can you name anything else that Thomas Bangalter has done?
I’m pretty sure he has woken up at some point in his life. Maybe even eaten something, too (But I don’t want to presume!!)
In any case, it’s not like his career has been irreversible or anything.
I prefer his trax on da rocks. He can even sprinkle them with stardust.
But surely that would cause an outrage.. Those two things together, it is like a void of some sort.
Sounds like some Punk who doesn’t know any better (i.e. is “Daft”).
;)
I don’t get it. Is this sarcasm? Are they popular? Someone explain it to me!
I am reminded of nothing so much as this. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to spread the genius that is Professor Elemental ;-)
Professor Elemental is the BEST THING.
Holy crap!
Now when I say herbal you say – No thanks!
Herbal-
No thanks
Weird French videos and pop music were my favorite parts of being a French major back in the day. Also the guy with a cane at 2:12 is my favorite part.
I’m super envious of those back flips he does!
But tall women don’t make good back flip candidates – our weight distribution is all wrong. BOO!
Addictive song, but also even more addictive dance sequence.
Also, did anyone think “Badger Badger” @3:35?
I only caught it the third time.
The first thing I thought of was Badger Badger when I saw that!
That was exactly what I needed after finishing a Nier Let’s Play. Thanks, Shamus.
That is good. But it is no Foux Da Fa Fa.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZG2Cb1I7oo
I mean how can you compete against New Zealand’s fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo.
Damn. Now I have fallen into a Flight of the Conchords time sink.
Hahaha – you’ve been Hoisted with your own petard!
Uh…except you got me too.
Huh, just found out that the guy also does stuff for Screw Attack (the site that AVGN and Moviebob are affiliated with). I actually do remember seeing him go to the Spike Video Game Awards for the sake of annoying/trolling guests by grilling them about obscure old school gaming trivia.
When I read the part about “duplicating the same dance at different locations and intercutting them” my thoughts immediately turned to World Order. They’re a Japanese synchronized movement group that does something similar in some of their videos, and although the overall style is very different, I think you might enjoy them:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDOPNLzEFH0
this video does nothing to dissuade my theory that all Japanese people are secretly robots.
It’s supposed to be a secret?
They’ve been manufactured around 3rd century B.C. and have since been trying to infiltrate humanity and fit in with the rest of us. But… it’s not been working out as great as they have hoped for.
Thanks for the link, that’s fantastic. I particularly enjoy how the slow-motion walking plays with our assumptions: we’re so used to that sort of thing being done digitally, these days, that it took me a while to consider the idea that they might just be walking funny, no special effects needed.
Funny, too, how little interference they get from the people walking all around them. Some curious stares, but nobody seems to want to mess with them (unless they just edited those bits out, of course).
Well keep in mind that was shot in New York. New Yorkers have seen stranger things. Odds are New Yorkers have paid to see stranger things.
You should watch one of their singles called “Mind Shift”, it was shot in mostly Tokyo I think and around there nobody bothers to even look twice, because…”Hey, it’s Japan, thats how things are ALL THE TIME over there.”
Interesting fact about World Order; The singer, Genki Sudo is a retired Japanese league MMA fighter. I don’t watch much MMA, but the few clips I’ve seen is enough to tell me that he kicks all sorts of ass.
French pop music? I think Shamus has lost control and the virus made this post.
Or it spread from his computer to his brain. The cheap sci-fi flicks were right!
Thank Andraste that it wasn’t one of the expensive sci-fi flicks, then. o.O
Except its not really pop music anymore, its been remixed into some sort of house/electropop thing. You wanna see French Pop music? Watch the original song/video. Its almost unbearable to listen to after hearing this remix.
Seamus,
have you come out to your wife, or are you just waiting for her to run across this post?
This for some reason reminds me of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HG92NUXKzZ0 but the only thing those two have in common is dancing in a lot of different places.
Okay, that got me. I want to visit Iceland one point before I die.
If only to be disapointed that they don’t all dance like that on a whim.
Yay Emiliana Torrini. Horay for happy music!
sorta related. Forgive the slow opening…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3gEHRENCHc&feature=related
not same people in different places but same dance…
I’ll just leave this here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bdSfmYdJ8o
Obligatory: Photoshopped! Heh, looks like he was blue screened into most, if not all the scenes.
But now, I wish I could dance, and I really WOULD do something like that, only less blue screen >.>
Um, no. It definitely does not look blue-screened at all. There’s no fuzziness or sharp clipping around the edges, and the lighting is correct for each scene. Also, shadows.
I can tell from some of the pixels and from seeing quite a few bluescreens in my time.
Stop running Windows and that problem will fix itself. :-P
Watched it again, some scenes are real, some of the ones with him in front of cars (but not all), the scenes in the yard and when he was a black outline in a dark parking garage were real, but most of the rest weren’t. Either he was the wrong size, or shadows were just wrong (or missing).
Sorry, I just like to over-analyze stuff. Still, good video, great dancing, and nice song. Well made! I just… apparently like telling kids the magic ain’t real? I’m bad :(
Its pretty safe to say that every scene with other people standing around is real. If you look carefully, you can see almost every single one of those people react to his presence.
Also, the scenes where the ground was muddy were real because every time he took a step, the mud deformed around his feet.
And yes, I watch for that kind of stuff.
Actually, his shadow is there in pretty much all the scenes as far as I saw. They were very faint in a fair few, but if you watch for movement around his feet, you can see them. (The place he is in is evidently just well lit)
Well, the ones with multiple copies of him were clearly edited, but even then I’m pretty sure it’s more a case of blending multiple shots together rather than bluescreening.
This is orrible!
Video made my day. Thanks!
*edit: After having watched it a couple of times, I now seem to like French pop music as well.
I already knew that one because I’m stalking your Youtube favorites like a creeper. I demand proper new content! -_-
Gaaaah! I though of about four diferent videos to go with the topic, but someone does not want us to see them, for copyright reasons.
DAMMMMMIT, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU MAKING VIDEOS FOR IF YOU FORCE YOUTUBE TO NOT SHOW THEM?
Face it, MTV isn’t doing music videos anymore, you won’t sell music video DVDs, so why do you even make them? Private collection?
Ok, best thing I found that was not secret:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDUsDrBiYbI
Peter Licht, “Wettenspannen” — “competitive relaxing” “Those who relax faster is better than those who take more time to relax, but they’re still better than the ones not relaxing at all” That’s what I’ll try very hard to do now.
But actually, that doesn’t even fit the topic so well, should have posted anything from OK GO, but I suppose everyone knows all of their videos by now. If not => go watch!
Completely unrelated:
I don’t know if you check your emails from the address listed in your “about the author” page, but if not then I got around to making a post about my reactions to Deus Ex, which you suggested several weeks ago.
http://ninjagameden.wordpress.com/2011/05/04/deus-ex/
In case you were interested…
Damn I’m out of practice, was in french immersion throughout elementary school, took all the extended french classes in high school and even became certified Bi-Lingual because of it. Yet I only understood every third word or so.
Enjoy music? Have a gander at this. Now I’m aware it came out on Intertube Records 3 days ago, which is like 18 internet years ago, but it’s still pretty good, if you can ignore the cliché.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54VJWHL2K3I&feature=player_embedded
And the horrible, horrible auto-tuning.
Thanks for fun diversion for my kids and me on Saturday morning – this was lots of fun to watch, no matter if you’re 2, 8 or 37 years old :D
My response to “never before”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVutXe4vCd0
Makes more sense if you know how “Hare Hare Yukai” works. :p
I don’t know why you say “I wouldn’t normally listen to music like this”. It is electronic (at least the remix is), slightly varied, not too aggressive or fast, and it effectively has NO LYRICS unless you are a good French speaker.
Foreign pop is great for this. The human voice just becomes another instrument, and genres tend to break down. For example, I don’t usually listen to gospel music, but thanks to NPR, I listen to this: http://youtu.be/xrC9XzX5PFs
As far as I can tell, this is a story about a big game hunter being chased by a lion who then tries to escape using his inexplicable ability to teleport via the power of dance.
