DMotR Special 3:
The Elven Hillbillies

This week I’m posting some amusing screencaps and photoshoppings while I recover from surgery. DMotR will resume next week.

Cleetus couldn’t make it.

I admit this is crude and childish. I just saw this screencap of Elrond with this stupid look on his face and the joke sort of just happened. I will say that the elves in the final scene do look a bit goofy. I photoshopped these guys into a single frame and put the lipstick on Bobby, but other than that they appear as you see them above. They look a little less majestic than the elves elsewhere in the story. Aside from Elrond, they all have a cosplay look to them.

  1. Vinchenze says:

LOL i love the subtitles you put also FIRST POST!

  2. Terran says:

    Oh, it hurts…

  3. Jochi says:

I should feel guilty for sniggering at this, but I don’t.

It reminds me of not a few camps at Pennsic War.

And thank you for keeping these coming in spite of your R&R time, Shamus. This is by far better than the unnanounce hiatus some of your colleagues/competition appear to be on.

  4. Cenobite says:

No! You so did not go there Shamus! You used the word “cosplay” on Lord Elrond! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  5. Jindra34 says:

Comedic but less than what i have come to expect from you.

  6. wowzaa says:

    Oh Gods

  7. Myxx says:

Man, I laughed at that Shamus. Well played.

And no offense Jindra, but what the hell kind of comment is that?

  8. SiliconScout says:

OK I had to look up cosplay.

I found that it’s an acronym for costume play (for any other dunderheads out there who never heard the word before).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosplay

    Funny as usual King Shamus

  9. Gary's Friend Jim says:

Yeah, let’s let Shamus get back up to speed… he just had friggin’ surgery, eh?

  10. Nazgul says:

Too funny! I always thought that the sort of bottle-blonde elf thing from the movies was a little creepy.

I suggest that from this day forward, Haldir should be renamed “Earl.”

  11. Scarlet Knight says:

    “Terran Says: Oh, it hurts…”

Wasn’t that Pippin’s line to Zeke?

(I am going to hell for that one, ain’t I?…)

  12. JoystickHero says:

That guard behind the transvestite is looking at Elrond’s ass.

  13. scldragonfish says:

Sorry everybody—I just dealt with some bible-thumpers at my door a while ago. Still a little aggressive.

  14. Zudrak says:

Easy, scldragonfish. Some “bible thumpers” actually read these and like RPG’s, etc.

  15. Zudrak says:

Shamus, nice work. “Aunt” Bobby had me howling. LOL

  16. Al Shiney says:

I, too, wanted to lash out at Jindra34’s lack of decorum and good sense, but scldragonfish did my work for me … although probably with a little more “zest” than I would have used. :-)

Zudrak, point taken … there are ‘bible thumpers’ and there are “BIBLE THUMPERS”, the latter being the ones that go door-to-door and try to convince others that they’re right and everybody else is wrong. Even as a Christian, I can’t resist inviting “those” types into the backyard where my friends and I are sacrificing a goat to our god … and then, hilarity ensues.

Nice comic, Shamus, but I expected so much more of you now that your no-talent-hack of a gall bladder has ceased poisoning your artistic and comedic efforts ;-)

  17. scldragonfish says:

(shrugs)I was apologizing for my violent reaction. I don’t really care if I offend somebody. I meant everyword I said.

  18. Osvaldo Mandias says:

    jindra=boo

  19. TarAncalime says:

Bwahahah! Shamus, you never cease to entertain. Feel better! :)

  20. Dan says:

Man oh man. A cosplay reference right in front of our very eyes for three years and it takes a gall-bladderless Shamus to draw us the picture.

I was going to literally ROFLMAO, but I’m at work, and would have a hard time walking out the front door with security without my buttocks muscles. So I opted not. Please, though, consider it done in spirit.

  21. Jack says:

Can I say FIRST POST even though I’m down at 21????

  22. Roy says:

Yeah, jindra… what does that even mean?

You are probably one of those people who think Jeff Foxworthy is a hack because you are still a virgin living with your mother in UnderDog PJs, while he is a freaking multi-millionaire !

Eh. I think Foxworthy is a hack because… well… he’s a hack. That he’s a wealthy hack doesn’t make him funny, it just makes him rich.

And seriously, leave my Underdog PJs out of this. Ain’t nothing wrong with Underdog. ;P

  23. TalrogSmash says:

Hey Shamus, you’re so famous that critics are “expecting” of you, wonder what organization he writes for? I wanna see the whole review. What’s that you say? He’s just a wannabe playa hata? Remove that post!

    Al Shiney

If they enter the backyard you get to save the goat for next week!

    HEy Shamus

  24. The lipstick was a brilliant touch. Those guys all looked a little light in their longswords.

  25. Absolutely Awesome faces!

Over all, its amazing how many goofy faces there are is such a serious set of movies like LotR

  26. Ishmael says:

(shrugs)I was apologizing for my violent reaction. I don't really care if I offend somebody. I meant everyword I said.”

This is a perfect example of how extremes meet. Fanatical Christians who tell you you are going straight to Hell for not believing what they say are wrong, and very often hypocrites.

Fanatic Anti-Christians who decry all Christians as *being* said holier-than-thou fanatics are also wrong, and also very often hypocritical.

As with most things, truth and reason follow moderation. Also, the comic was HYSTERICAL Shamus. ^_^

  27. dtb says:

Funny, yes. Captions, crude, as Shamus admits. The screen cap is great, though, and the point is well taken. I think a better caption is in the comments: Convention Cosplay Winners. Maybe they all tied for last place.

    Get rest, and well, soon.

  28. Scarlet Knight says:

Whoa , guys! All Jindra34 Said was “less than what I have come to expect from you.”

It wasn’t insulting or over the top. You don’t want people to just “rubber stamp” approval, do you? If you do, then just cut & paste, “love it!” over & over. Disapproval makes approval all the sweeter!

So now Maynard is “Elrond Half Wit”?

  29. MOM says:

    11 Hillbillies? I only count 4.

  30. xbolt says:

What’s this? Rumblings of a religious debate in the comments for a special edition of DMotR? I would never have guessed…

Anyway, I could argue all day on the side of Christianity. (Mind you, I’m a normal Christian, not a ‘You’re going to hell!!!’ type guy.)
However, I don’t think Shamus would appreciate an argument very much…

Amusing picture, by the way. (Elrond Half-Wit :D )

  31. TheDarkOne says:

Man, this is a lot better than OotS. I am looking forward to the next one.

  32. scldragonfish says:

    HOT DAMN A HOLY WAR!!!

Hello, believe what you want, since when is ‘bible thumper’ a cultural slur? Be proud about your faith, just don’t selling to me when I am hung-over at 7:00 in the damn morning like its a discount candy bar for charity.

  33. Telas says:

Civilization in a nutshell: Be nice.

Good one, Shamus. Agent Halfelven was the weakest casting decision in the film, IMHO. He only sticks out because all the others were excellent choices.

  34. scldragonfish says:

    TO ROY,

Every successful comedian I have seen has a gimick that they exploit to rise in success. Its like saying Steve Carrel is a hack because he exploits his facial reactions or local bands that call famous bands ‘sell-outs’ just because they got popular and now are making money.

I was really just using him as an example of smartasses who look down on country humor–I mean someone must think its funny, otherwise Jeff wouldn’t have a job.

  35. ZackTheSTGuy says:

Shamus’ Mom said: “11 Hillbillies? I only count 4.”

Hee hee. It’s ‘elven’ hillbillies, ma’am. As in, they are elves. With pointy ears.

Hope the joke makes more sense now! Great pic, Shamus.

  36. Corvair says:

Mr. sclrdragonfish, I’d like to remind you that some people think racist jokes are funny. Some people think “Family Circus” is funny. Some people thought those “Wassup” commercials were funny. That doesn’t mean they’re not BAD.

Oh, and Shamus? Awesome pseudo-comic, and I love all the others. Get well soon!

  37. Corvair says:

Oh, and I don’t think the original comment really had much to do with Jeff Foxworthy. Just putting that out there.

  38. Rustybadger says:

@xbolt: “Normal” is just a setting on your dryer.

@scldragonfish: Don’t sweat it – I honestly doubt that any Christians who frequent this comic are even slightly offended at the pejorative use of “bible thumper” (except perhaps that you didn’t capitalise ‘Bible’?), since those of us liberal-minded enough to enjoy D&D-based humour don’t generally consider ourselves ‘bible-thumpers’.

I did like the mention of sacrificing goats by Al – that’s one I’ll have to try out!

  39. NeedsToHeal says:

Photoshopping is fun, isn’t it? Thank you Shamus, for going above and beyond by pre-posting some comic relief to us while you’re recovering. Much appreciated.

  40. Ryan says:

Eh, I’m a “Bible thumper”, I guess (although, it would be nice to have a good operational definition to use for comparison).

But, to get offended over the comments by an anonymous stranger in an RPG comic forum require an already querelous and thin skinned nature.

  41. Brandon says:

The whole obviously fake dye job blond hair mixed with dark eyebrows really ruined the whole elves thing for me. They’re supposed to be fair, not fake or Californian or whatever. Their hair isn’t sun-bleached so much as naturally fair.

  42. MOM says:

Hee hee. It's “˜elven' hillbillies, ma'am. As in, they are elves. With pointy ears.

    Who are you callin’ ma’am

  43. Shamus says:

Okay, I nuked some intemperate comments. I don’t know what happened to this thread. There are many forums on the internet which are stocked to the gills with people who LOVE to argue about government, religion, sports, and which Ninja Turtle was the best, but this isn’t one of those places.

I nuked some comments here, some in older posts where someone felt the need to bring up intelligent design. Nerd fandom has plenty of stuff for us to fight about without us needing to go looking for more.

    Crimey.

  44. Oona says:

Great job while you’re recovering, Shamus! Don’t eat too much ice cream. Or eggs. BTW, loved the Agent Halfelven bit, Telas! That made me LOL at work.

  45. Mari says:

What do you mean people argue about which Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle is best? Are there people out there so stupid they don’t know Donatello is da bomb? ;-P

Great screencap, Shamus! I literally laughed out loud. Long and loud enough for my kids to come see if mommy has finally gone off her rocker as she’s been promising to do all day. I think it’s the lipstick that did it. That and the fact that I’m pretty sure Aunt Bobby’s making eyes at me. I feel kind of dirty when s/he looks at me that way. Make her/him stop. Please.

  46. Errol says:

I’ll never look at a congregation of elflords the same way ever again :D I’ll keep on expecting to see the same people as above.

Great work and I wish you well on your recovery.

    Cheers!

  47. Clayton Barnett says:

Way back when the first movie came out, I briefed a friend of mine on the series before we went. When the Fellowship reached Lorien, he blurted out, “No wonder there’s no more elves; there’re all gay!” I don’t think that’s what JRRT had in mind, but it does fit… so to speak.

  48. Dave says:

Didn’t I just see those guys on the news?? oh.. nope.. I just live in Oceanside, CA.. and the big Comic Convention is happenin’ .. but I could swear the live feed from the convention had those guys in it.

  49. Deacon Blues says:

    My favorite elf is Ray:

“Has been dressing like a Jedi since 1978.”

    BWAH!

  50. Malice says:

This was one of the funniest strips yet. Zeke looks like he is very pleased with himself.

  51. oldschoolGM says:

Oh hell!!!! I just spit my drink through my nose! Priceless!

btw: Transvestite Elf looks kinda like Conan Obrien

  52. Matt says:

Looks like a Malfoy family reunion to me.

  53. Ashpile says:

ROFL! That’s just great! Especially “dresses like a JEDI since…” Love it! :D
BTW: long time reader, first time poster!

  54. Otters34 says:

Nah, the Malfoys wouldn’t look that cheerful.

Well done, Mr. Young, after all, Elves are hillbillies.

  55. Eclipse says:

Unless they were watching a disembowelling…

  56. Otters34 says:

Not a disembowling, maybe an evisceration, but not disembowling.

  57. Nogard (Bible-thumper) says:

    >Mari Says:
    >What do you mean people argue about which Teenage Mutant
    >Ninja Turtle is best? Are there people out there so stupid
    >they don't know Donatello is da bomb? ;-P

OMG you are so full of it… anyone who has read Eastman and Larid’s original TMNT comics knows that Raphael is the only one with any real style. ^_~

BTW, Shamus, hilarious… rest and recover quickly.

  58. Yahzi says:

Shamus said: Okay, I nuked some intemperate comments.

Ya, but you didn’t nuke the original one. Go ahead and nuke Jindra’s content-free slur. And then ban him. There’s no point in wasting even .3 seconds of our lives reading that kind of crap. You don’t need to tolerate cheap shots for the sake of your artistic integrity. And certainly the rest of us shouldn’t have to suffer through them.

  59. Spam Vader says:

Does it seem to anyone else that Zeke is cropping a feel on Maynard?

  60. Scarlet Knight says:

Welcome back, Shamus! You’ve restored order again.

Now let me congratulate you. You’ve made us laugh with Monty Python & with Princess Bride. You’ve done it with Schrodinger, a Tardis, and cosplay! Not only do you have your finger on the funny bone of gamers, but I’ve never realized the breath of possible topics. Bravo, sir. Well, done indeed!

  61. This is my first post. It took me a few days to find the time to squeeze in these comics by the score until I caught up… but time well spent. Good stuff, Shamus. Hope you’re feeling better, and Keep ’em coming!

  62. Vykker says:

Somehow seeing Elrond with the name Maynard is comedy gold.

  63. oldschoolGM says:

Just to reiterate. This may be the single funniest image I have ever seen. Ever. I think I am going to make this my wallpaper.

  65. DamoJO says:

This is probably the funniest entry Shamus has done. I mean I love the comic, but this is priceless.
Absolutely amazing considering this is just post-op fill in.
And may Jindra34 suffer an outbreak of butt-boils after being butt raped by the entire population of Zimbabwe.

  66. Rich says:

Well, considering that Hugo Weaving (Elrond) played a transvestite in “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”…

  67. Omni Rex Draconis says:

This is my first post here, so let me say thank you Shamus et al for the humour.

I don’t know what the excised posts contained, but I support your active moderation of the comments. This forum often has as much comedy as the strips themselves. It would be a shame to let just a few people ruin it.

    Get well soon.

  68. superfluousk says:

    Ray the Jedi Elf… excellent.

  69. nerdpride says:

I just noticed I never really considered thinking of elven men as having long hair like that; I sort of steamrolled over their faces with the movies (in some parts). And when Shamus photoshops them together, they look downright creepy.

A stoned guy is going to pop into my head whenever I think of Aragorn from now on, unfortunately. Not to say that the comic isn’t hillarious

  70. Crystal says:

sorry, the guy that called them the malfoys really did it for me! XD

  71. Laithoron says:

    70 nerdpride Says:
I just noticed I never really considered thinking of elven men as having long hair like that.

Hmm, I’m an elf, male and long-haired but I don’t understand why P.J. thought it necessary to make all of us elven men have severely receeding hair-lines. From that standpoint I never really considered thinking of elven men as having long hair like that either!

  72. hoyce says:

Crude or not, it made me giggle.

Thanks to Shamus for keeping updates coming in spite of surgery and over critical critics.

  73. Jaye says:

First off, get better soon Shamus.

Second, thank you so much for making me laugh …and so often. This strip is incredible.

    Jaye

  74. Medium Dave says:

All the hermaphrodites are happy to see the only female looking elf leave…

  75. Jochi says:

Oh, come on, folks. I reacted negatively to Jindra’s comment too, largely because of the timing while we are being supportive — some of us smarmily so. But really, all that was said was “This is funny, but I felt it was less funny than usual.” In poor taste because of the timing — but nobody would read it if it was posted two weeks from now. These things are time-sensitive.

But the level of vitriol in response did range into the totally inappropriate, as Shamus said completely out of character for the tone of this forum. He edited the list in a way that compromised between allowing free speech and keeping that tone — and NOT cutting comments that failed to adequately stroke his ego. I applaud his decision — as much as his return to ‘active duty’.

I mean, really, why should Jindra be banned whan the guy who’s only contribution is to post a four-letter-word for “whoremonger” isn’t?

  76. Caius says:

Leave it to star was to claim all costumes that resemble Jedi garb. And my goodness Zeke is creepy looking

  77. xbolt says:

Rustybadger Says: “@xbolt: “Normal” is just a setting on your dryer.”

Oh, good. Sarcasm. I happen to enjoy sarcasm. :D

  78. Ambidexter says:

In the movie, Elrond (or Hugo Weaving) looks like he’s been constipated for five hundred years.

  79. capitain says:

Shamus, you´ve got a crude, rude mind. And I´m lovin´ it.

Someone up there said he/she will never be able to see the elves as elves again. Uh, really. Did anybodey see THEM as fair elves? Did somebody, ANYbody see them different than shamus does?
-I really like the movie. Really, really do. But frankly, Jackson (use f-word of your choice)ed-up the whole elven-thing. I can live without Bombadil. I can bear the hobbit´s going with Faramir to Osgiliath. I can stomach the orks storming osgiliath d-day style. I can accept the whole retaking of the shire was too long, too much. I can live with umpteen-zillion other inconsequent things. BUT: The elves do look neither fair, nor straight (no insult intended). And another thing while i´m ranting. Degrading a dwarf to a sidekick in an epic movie just won´t go.

  80. Dan says:

Wait a minute. Is that Figwit (from Flight of the Conchords) as Ray?

  81. EmeraldTiara says:

does anyone else notice that elrond is BALDING?

  82. Nadzghoul says:

To be in character after seeing this… ‘MY PRECIOUS — IT HURRTTTSSS USSS!’

    ;)

  83. Toil3T says:

    Hey! That’s mean.
(My last name is Hill, I live in One Tree Hill, (In the Adelaide Hills), and I’m playing an elf)

  84. Robel says:

Dresses like a Jedi :)) That got my pants wet dammit!

  85. ShadowsLight says:

They look like Wraith, but without the makeup

  86. Ciryandor says:

Now which of the writers should own up to Gimli becoming a much less serious character? Black humor and a tinge of sarcasm in a deadpan dwarven delivery would have been enough to give him the level of seriousness the others comparatively have without losing any of the laughs.

  87. serenitybane says:

Ahaha yes! The images are perfect!

  88. Aeseihtur says:

That Elrond is a Smith (no seriously, same actors)

  89. Invalidiot says:

Is the Elrond referencing the Maynard of the old sitcom Dobie Gillis?Maynard was portrayed by Bob Denver who was Gilligan in Gilligan’s Island. It’s a way late post but i just found this site 2 days ago and was curious.Great webcomic btw.

  90. WJS says:

Spam Vader: “Does it seem to anyone else that Zeke is cropping a feel on Maynard?”

That’s not the half of it. He’s not shopped in, in the film those two are standing together like that. And unlike most of the funny faces throughout the comic that are split-second screengrabs, he’s standing there with that goofy grin on his face all through Elrond’s brief speech. It’s really kind of creepy.
