The Next Webcomic

Thanks to Mr. Myth for this positive review of DMotR.

And while we’re on the subject of the webcomic:

Lots of people have been making suggestions here and there about what I should do next, so I can see this is something people are thinking and wondering about. In order to satisfy some of the curiosity:

  1. We’re probably about a month away from the end of DMotR.
  2. Yes, I do plan on doing another comic once DMotR has run its course.
  3. The next comic will be hosted elsewhere. I know some people mentioned that they won’t visit Twenty Sided if my comic is hosted elsewhere. That’s fine. The comic has more or less consumed my blog, and I’m looking forward to getting the two of them their own space. It’s sort of mortifying when I mention something like my surgery and get over a hundred comments. I feel like I’m on stage and someone has just handed me the mic, the PA system is at full volume, and I start muttering about aches and pains and the trivialities of life. Personal life stuff is small audience stuff. I can do big-audience stuff (the comic) over there, and small audience stuff here. Some people will read one, or the other, or both, or neither.
  4. Barring a C&D from the forces of Lawyerdom, the DMotR archives will remain on this site.
  5. The next webcomic will be roleplaying satire. It will not be Star Wars.

I’ll make a less weasel-ish announcement as we get closer to the end.

I for one do not care where the next comic strip is hosted. I’ll wade through an infinite number of pop-up ads to get to it, too.

  2. Phil says:

“It will *not* be Star Wars.”
    Laaame.

  3. Cenobite says:

Oh, and if you are taking suggestions as to what should be the target of your next strip: I suggest the Harry Potter movies. That’ll give you 7 films of footage to work from. (I figure that by the time you work your way up to spoofing Book 5, Book 7 will have finished its run in theaters and be available on DVD.)

    Sorry for the double post.

  4. Andrew Cory says:

Me? I’m going to keep reading this blog. At least, I will as long as you promise to keep writing interesting things…

  5. Gary says:

I’m to lazy to learn how to “unsubscribe” in my RSS feed so I’ll probably keep ready this too :P.

  6. Alexis says:

Well, your surgery wasn’t exactly trivial… if you wanted to moan about your bitch of an ex-girlfriend, that would absolutely be small audience I agree! All your posts have a clear motivation, you know why we’ll be interested. So to that extent, all your posts seem big-audience to me. Still, your blog, your rules :)

I liked your posts about games btw.

  7. Eric says:

I’ll still be around, hoping to see another D&D campaign’s narrative. Whatever you’ve got planned for your next comic, I’m looking forward to it!

Seven films of footage, but largely incompatible with each other because those kids have the pesky tendency to grow up and look meaningfully different between one film and the next.

    Random Guess: It’s ERAGON.

  9. Tango says:

    Another narrative would be cool.

  10. Ian says:

I’ll definitely keep coming here despite you putting your next comic elsewhere. I’ve actually been paying more attention to your other postings than the comics lately.

  11. Nilus says:

I will keep reading this blog. Mostly because I enjoy reading about strangers lives.

  12. Katy says:

    > Eric

That’s what I’m hoping for, too. I want to read through another campaign.

  13. The Gneech says:

Aww! I woulda loved to have seen Frodo and Sam playing Obi-Wan and Anakin.

    -The Gneech

  14. Rob says:

Came for the webcomic. Stayed for the man…

Wait did that sound gay? Because I’m not gay… NOT that there’s anything wrong with that… :)

  15. Jeremiah says:

Since I seriously doubt you’re taking suggestions for the next comic, Shamus. I just want to say I’ll read it no matter what material it comes from, because I’m sure it will be great.

And, like other people, I came here for the comic, but now I read all your posts (and have gone through all the archives, as well). So, wherever stuff is posted, I’ll be reading it.

  16. Telas says:

“You know how I know you’re gay?” LOL

Seriously, please provide some obvious linkage from here to the other site.

And I like your non-DMotR posts. You’ve got a good perspective on the world, and the ability to put it into prose. Your description of your neighbor’s passing is simply amazing.

And I sincerely hope it’s the original Star Trek. The Kirk/Lizardman fight reeks of RPG combat.

    Telas

  17. Amanda says:

The Eregon movie was so bad and cut up he could finish it in 4 posts.

Harry Potter was actually the first thing that occured to me too.

  18. Melfina the Blue says:

If the jokes stay half as funny, I’ll heartly enjoy the new comic, and I’ll keep reading the blog, cause I enjoy it too.

  19. Dr-Online says:

I actually came originally around midway through the D&D chronicle you started the blog around, near as I can tell.

I’ll stay by you for quite some time, unless you start bashing Fallout, OldWoD Mage, or Cyberpunk. In that order.

  20. Corsair says:

I’m hoping he does Star Trek, too, either TNG or TOS. Riker as the intergalactic manwhore…

  21. Jimmie says:

I feel like I'm on stage and someone has just handed me the mic, the PA system is at full volume, and I start muttering about aches and pains and the trivialities of life.

Hey, Phyllis Diller made a fortune out of doing that!

And you’d look fabulous in gold lame and a feather boa!

  22. Jimmie says:

Oh..and as logn as we’re guessing the next sendup, I’m going to go with “Hawk the Slayer”.

  23. Otters34 says:

If it is Eragon, I presume that the DM responsible will be banned at the end of the campaign from trying to make anymore campaigns based on books.Oh, and the main character needs that ring of protection versus face-punching you mentioned.
Fake British accents are nothing to the real thing.

  24. JT says:

    >>Some people will read one, or the other, or both, or neither.

  25. JT says:

Well, that didn’t work. Let’s try again:

    ————————————————————-
Some people will read one, or the other, or both, or neither.
    ————————————————————-

Truth tables! Run away, run away!!!

  26. Inane Fedaykin says:

I came for the comic and stayed for the blog, I’ve honestly found it more entertaining.

  27. xbolt says:

    *Chants* Eragon! Eragon! Eragon!

    Or not… Whichever. :D

  28. DiscountNinja says:

I’ll read both your comic and your blog, as I feel they’re interlinked – the comic is hilarious, but I find the rest of your blog to be witty and insightful!

As for it not being Star Wars, I can understand that :| Glad to know you’re doing another one though :D

I wonder what an RPG Flash Gordon would be like …

  29. DiscountNinja says:

Also, sorry for the doulb epost, but … is the picture of the girl near the heading Winry?

  30. Dmitri says:

Here’s hoping Shamus will cover computer RPGs now, such as the Final Fantasy series.

Each FF from 5 on is ridiculously long (4 was only about 10 hours, including sidequests), ranging from 20 to a hefty 60+ for a plot run of FFX, excluding sidequests.

The content to draw from is vast. I’m not sure what the jokes can be, but Shamus has proven his talent with DMotR so I wouldn’t doubt the success of that comedy branch.

  31. Stark says:

I’ve got one word for you….. “Krull”

    or maybe “Alien”…. nah…

    “Krull”

  32. Lune says:

What about… Conan. I can totally see it happening.

  33. Lycoris says:

I’m hoping there will be some “missing scenes” after the end of the story. You mentioned a few months ago that you really skimmed over some of the stuff at the beginning, so I’m sure there’s plenty of material for more. I understand wanting to move on, though!

  34. Dave says:

Shamus, Shamus, Shamus.. since when did you start thinking you were allowed to have your own thoughts and opinions?.. Really.. the nerve.

Now.. the next comic will be DM of Teletubbies. .. ‘nuf said.

And I’m not reading anything if you put it anywhere else.. I don’t know how to click on things or do anything for myself.. therefor all your content is required to be placed here.. as a matter of fact.. for now on I think you will be e-mailing your content to me.. but only on Tuesdays and Thursdays after 4pm PST unless it’s of a personal nature.. then Wednesday or Saturday before 6pm but after 11am GMT..

    That is all.

  35. Leon says:

You mentioned a while ago that you kind of rushed through the first few movies. If you have the time, you could do what The Zombie Hunters (another webcomic I read) did: put new strips into the archives, announce it on your main page, and watch the site’s traffic roll in.

  36. Telas says:

    Conan:

“And unto this, Conan, destined to wear the jeweled crown of Kah’Le For’Neeya upon a troubled brow…”

  37. Craig says:

I would love to see another campeign written out on this site. That would keep me coming back after dmotr is over.

  38. Ralff says:

Evil Dead in a Call of Cthulu game.

  39. andy says:

Not star wars? damn. But I for another will be sticking around to hear your random musings :)

  40. jbrandt says:

I actually totally dig your blog and would probably continue to read it and forget to read the new comic. Heh. (Or I’d put an RSS feed somewhere so I don’t have to remember.)

  41. Shamus

I came because of the comic but i will be staying for everything else.

  42. Mars says:

Came for the comics, stayed for the blog…
What happened to those thoughts about making funny screencaps from Star Trek TNG, you said yourself that there would be a LOT of material to work with (I myself have acquired ST TNG divx version on 14 DVD-s, so I know theres a LOT of material in those episodes), and it’s easily interchangeable because the characters don’t change their appearances that often (but I have read that the uniforms changed a bit a few times (sorry, I’m not a complete trekkie (please don’t punish me if I confused trekkie and trekker), just watch the show for the fun, interest in future technology and interracial diplomacy (it’s very encouraging seeing so many diverse species working together, something racist people should have a look at here on Earth))

  43. Robyrt says:

Great – other webcomickers like Jeph Jacques have done this separation very successfully, and you get to avoid the “one million people read my blog and send me stupid comments” syndrome without driving away the people who actually care.

  44. Browncoat says:

    Hmm…There are votes for
    1. Eragon (which I’ve read, but not yet seen. I almost bought it at WalMart last night, but I just bought a new Washer/Dryer, so I didn’t by a movie. Also, I didn’t read it. I borrowed the book on tape from the library and listened to it. Only it wasn’t on tape–it was CDs. The narrator is no Jim Dale.),
    2. Conan (would the player playing Conan have lines like “Aragorn’s Breastplate! Look at the size of that!”?), and
    3. Harry Potter (Speaking of Conan and Harry Potter, Conan O’Brian had this to say on Aug 2: “In Florida, a man whose name is Harry Potter says that he is constantly harassed by prank phone calls. Potter thinks the calls are coming from his neighbor down the street, Joey Voldermort.”)

I’m surprised no one voted for The Princess Bride. I don’t know how Shamus would do it since the heroes only join together towards the end of the movie, but I didn’t know how Shamus would handle Frodo’s taming of Smeagol, either.

If I had a vote, I’d vote, perhaps predictibly, for Firefly. Not cause I think it’d make a great role-playing-based-web-comic, but cause I like it.

And, (I’ll close with this, I promise), not to hijack the thread, but I was wondering what the “Top Ten Worst Movies/TV Shows to Base a WebComic On” might be.

    10. Gilligan’s Island.

    your turn…

  45. M says:

Hmmm, I wonder how the two “Underworld” movies would read as a satire of an OWoD vampire-werewolf crossover. :)

  46. Kris says:

My Vote is The Princess Bride. That would be a rockin’ campaign. I’d want to be the Sicilian.

  47. SteveDJ says:

Darn. I was kinda hoping to rewind and replay the second and third LotR movies again, only this time from Frodo’s perspective (after Dave and company have grown tired of Star Wars and return wanting to continue playing the characters they started…)

  48. YaVerOt says:

The Princess Bride? There generally problems parodying well done comedy.
Firefly? Probably not enough content, like my preferred choice: Dune.

  49. Laithoron says:

I dunno, seeing as how Shamus likes to have Agent Elrond appear at odd moments, my guess is that the next strip will be based on The Matrix.

  50. Dave says:

Looks like you guys didn’t hear.. Shamus has be ordered to do DM of the Teletubbies… I can’t wait to see who he has playing Poe!

  51. Darkling says:

I have to say, Harry Potter being a bit of a Holy Grail would be excellent. I will beg that Eragon not enter into the discussion as a serious option again. I have felt much pain at my attempts to accept what can only be called “an arrogent attept at pure shlock”. Yeah yeah, I know WHY it’s considered a great book. That doesn’t make it one, nor did it help the movie from being anything less than pure pain to the psyche. Come on, you people will happily tear apart Transformers, ignoring that it was simply big nerds playing with computers for fun and nostalgia, but you’ll actually put Eragon up for a satire? Where is the consistancy in that?

  52. Marty says:

    Stark @ 31:
I was totally thinking “Krull” just now… Weird.

On a somewhat related note, I saw that movie again in the last year or so. I hadn’t remembered how absolutely terrible it was… I guess movies like that are a lot more fun at age 13.

  53. AndiN says:

    #38 Ralff said:
Evil Dead in a Call of Cthulhu game.

I was thinking the same thing. Just imagine how frustrated the players would get having to roll up new characters every movie because they went insane or died! I can see them now, getting confused about who each is playing. :-D

    “I thought you were so-and-so?”
“Nah, he died, remember, so I had to roll up a new character.”

  54. Retarded Rayne says:

Honestly, if the next webcomic is as good as DMotR, I will read it no matter if it be Harry Potter or even Teletubbies. I have never laughed so much reading a comic as DMotR, and can only hope that the next webcomic will keep me laughing. Thanks Shamus!

  55. Eric Towers says:

Although I like some of the other suggestions, there’s vastly more source material in the Hercules/Xena/Prince of Thieves universe…

  56. some kid says:

Hey shamus, you should do a comic based on The Call of Cthulhu. That would be sweet.

  57. Markus says:

Like several other commentators, I came for the comic but I’ll keep reading your blog after DMotR is done. I love the PC gaming rants…

    :-)

  58. MooseAlmighty says:

    Hi Shamus,

Just discovered this site last nite! Now caught up and honestly I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time. Fantastic work. Great screen caps, well written, and perfectly captures years of gaming moments.

Quite curious to see the “grand finale” where the world is saved by two characters who quit the campaign months ago….

Definitely looking forward to your next effort.
