Joss Whedon says, “YOU are a HUGE nerd!”

Joss calls out a fan for nerding out on his material, and then signs the wrong name to an autograph. It’s silly and hilarious. I wish I was a famous writer so I could go around acting like this. (That is, acting as if I wasn’t famous.)

haha, nice. To be fair, he looks a lot different from his star trek days, but its gotta be pretty insulting to be accused of cosplaying yourself… xD

  2. Feylamia says:

    Gotta love the man.

  3. Hawk says:

I feel like I should turn in my geek credentials. Who is Joss Whedon?

  4. eloj says:

I assume the joke here is that they’re ALL in on it?

  5. BarGamer says:

You can turn it in over here: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0923736/

  6. ofb says:

Was Joss ever in Star Trek? Not to my knowledge.

  7. =Dan says:

Joss Whedon is directing the new Star Trek right?

If that was a joke, it wasn’t that funny

  8. Dragonbane says:

Uhhhh, Hawk? You won’t need to turn in those credentials. The angry mob of actual geeks is on their way to burn your house down as we speak. Not knowing Joss Whedon in this decade is rather like not knowing J. Michael Straczynski in the 90’s or Gene Roddenberry in the 60’s. I doubt he’ll become as commonplace a name as Roddenberry is now, but it’s practically criminal as a professed geek to not know creators of Firefly, Babylon 5 and Star Trek.

  9. Kevin says:

That was hysterical! Every time I’ve seen him he’s always been very kind and generous with his time, and the people who work with him constantly tell stories of what a delight he is to have on a project. He just seems to be a good guy.

  10. aserraric says:

@mark: I think you are confusing him with Wil Wheaton. The angry geek mob may come by your house, too.

Also, =Dan, J.J. Abrams is directing the new Star Trek movie. The geek fu is weak here today.

  11. Shamus says:

    Geeze….

Who let all these jocks in on this thread?

Everyone knows Wil Wheaton is the guy who played Luke Skywalker, and Joss Whedon is the guy behind Battlestar Galaga.

  12. Stephen says:

I’ll admit, I had to Google the name, too. Battlestar Galaga was my favorite video game back in the day, right next to Gravitar.

  13. Phil says:

Battlestar Galaga? I would so play that if someone put it together.

  14. Templar says:

    … “galaga”

oh man, i just got coffee in my nasal passage. lol

  15. Sam says:

Okay, that was the second-funniest video I’ve seen in a while. Behind Nailing Your Wife, which, rather coincidentally, stars Nathan Fillion. It’s kinda NSFW, so be prepared.

  16. Capt_Poco says:

Cool vid, but the guy is *not* famous. Brad Pitt is famous. Steven Spielberg is famous. This guy? I bet most people had to look him up on google (I know I did).

  17. Arson55 says:

How can so many people here not know who Joss Whedon is?

Shamus, I think you’ve broken your site. You’re letting non-nerds in.

  18. WysiWyg says:

Ahh, that made my day (night)! It reminds me of the story where Charlie Chaplin supposedly won third price in a Charlie Chaplin look-a-like contest. ;-)

Man, if Joss ever runs for president I just might consider becoming an american just to vote for him. ;-)

  19. Calli says:

Was not liking Gene Roddenberry’s or J. Michael Straczynski’s work in their respective eras an offense punishable by death, too? Because that’s the vibe I get from some of the…we shall say more ardent fans of Whedon.

  20. Maddie says:

Calli, Dragonbane didn’t compare it to LIKING Roddenberry or JMS. Only knowing who they were. Which you obviously do.

The video was awesome. I appreciate people who don’t take themselves too seriously.

  21. Kaeltik says:

20 posts and no Dr. Horrible. Shamus, forgive us, for we have strayed.

  22. Hanz says:

Like how Joss at least has a sense of humor about himself and can go into some self-deprecation.

Still, only thing I watched from Whedon is Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, which is absolutely fantastic. Those of whom that haven’t seen it should (free online).

  23. Calli says:

    Maddie @20:

It wasn’t my intent to conflate his comment about knowing them with liking them — I was just wondering if the rabid fanbase factor existed in those respective eras as well. (And reading back, I see I wrote my comment really, really badly…erk.) I’m guessing it probably did, and the reason I didn’t notice was because I was too young and/or not paying much attention.

Firefly never grabbed me, and the way people rave about it and give strange looks to people who don’t like it makes me feel like a freak. I liked Dr. Horrible until the final few minutes, though.

  24. Mari says:

I suddenly feel like a HUGE geek just for knowing who Joss Whedon is. I mean, I already knew what a huge geek I am but I didn’t realize that I needed to list this in my credentials. Should I also start including extensive knowledge of Kevin Smith? Or maybe Steven Hawking or Steve Wozniak? Or should I just retreat back to my corner of Mom’s basement and stop trying to interact with the rest of the world?

  25. Vacca says:

IMDB says that Joss is 6’4″. If that’s true, the guy interviewing him must be 7′.

I only know about Joss because of Firefly and Serenity. Just wish he’d been a bit more aggressive in trying to get Firefly picked up by another network.

  26. Miral says:

    @Hanz:
Dr. Horrible is only free online for those people based in the US. (Or those people who know how to work a US-based anonymising proxy.) Still, hopefully the DVD will be coming out soon.

And yes, the number of posts here claiming to not know who The Joss is makes me sad.

  27. Hanz says:

Yeah, forgot to mention that. Still, for those who can, it’s worth checking out.

  28. Aaron says:

I believe the people from Geek Week were in on the joke. It was that kind of podcast. It’s worth checking out their other stuff, especially the Secret Wars re-enactment society.

  29. mark says:

haha, i’m no jock, I loved firefly! I just got the two mixed up. He still looks like he’d been sleeping rough that week. :P

  30. ryanlb says:

That was so awesome. I’m a big Joss fan, hope all goes well with Dollhouse.

  31. Dan says:

Lord God Almighty, can we please just have everyone banned today? Shamus is right. Geek-fu very sad.

Uh. Dr. Horrible anyone? Serenity? Buffy the DADBLASTED VAMPIRE SLAYER??????

Just when I thought we had turned the corner in the Age of Darkness known formerly as “My Childhood.”

    Joss Whodon?

I think proper pennance dictates that it is back to programming a database for the Fiend Folio in BASIC for all of us.

I swear on stack of She-Hulks.

  32. dan says:

Are all the fans here saying that OF COURSE they would recognize this guy immediately across the street or standing behind him in line at the deli? And anyone who wouldn’t is ignorant?

    Paying attention to physical appearance?
Judging others by their knowledge of popular culture?

Geek? – Ur doin it rong.

Taking glory in knowing something obscure that someone else doesn’t? .. OK, that’s geeky.

Not immediately recognizing the face of a behind-the scenes guys is not a sin.
I mean, I couldn’t pick Gene Roddenberry out of a line-up. The name, yes, but the face? Huh?

    Meh.
