From Steven Den Deste:

Shamus Young has been watching Sugar, a little Snow Fairy. After that, we’ll get him to watch Haibane Renmei and then he’ll be ours. (MWAAhaahaa!)

You already got me. I was working on Haibane Renmei in Febuary. I haven’t mentioned it because I can’t think of a single thing to say that wouldn’t just be a clumsy “me too”. I don’t have anything to add add to what has already been said. Steven is right: This is as good as it gets.

I suppose now is a good time to say thanks, though. I never would have tried HR if it hadn’t been for the glowing review.

Back when I was first messing around with Anime, I managed to take in a lot of dreck. (Big O, Bubblegum Crisis 2040, and Blue Gender come to mind) I sort of backed off for a bit. Now I’ve learned to surf around and farm some opinions before having Netflix send me anything.

So, when are you going to take Steven Den Beste up on his recommendation of Card Captor Sakura? Yeah, it’s 70 episodes long or so, but it’s probably the best magical-girl anime there is. Of course, you have to like magical-girl anime. :) And get your mind out of the gutter! :)

I watched it when it first came out here in the US, and I *still* can’t get the first-season opening theme out of my head.

OK, so I’m a perv. But it’s so damn infectious…..!

Heh. I saw disc 1 of the series and had to stop because it was sub-only, not dub. I decided to wait until a dub comes along. I’m trying to sample at least one of every genre, and ideally I’d like to try the BEST of each genre, which I understand that CCS is the best of the magical girl shows.

Also, I saw a promo for the CCS movie on the Sugar disc, and I may check out the movie before the TV version.

However: I looks like there are 2 flavors of CCS out there? Or the art style changed a great deal at some point. Sakura looks very different in the movie promo compared to what I saw in the TV version. I’m also wondering if these are disconnected stories that bear the same name. (as in the two versions of Bubblegun Crisis) I need to investigate this more.

So it may happen. I may even try something REALLY crazy, like DBZ. :)

Are you kidding? I love that song! It’s like Flash Gordon version 2.0!

Of course, I also like BGC 2040, so what do I know?

Alright, I leave it for the listener to decide. The Big O theme:

    Clicky!

  7. The story on Card Captor Sakura is this: originally the series was licensed in to the US, but the American licensee decided to “improve” the story. The result is a series called “Card Captors” which was made by re-editing the series and takng pieces of different episodes and putting them together. It’s shorter, it’s in English only, and by all accounts it sucks massively. The characters were radically changed, mostly for the worse. Kinomoto Sakura was renamed to “Sakura Avalon”. Tomoyo was renamed “Madison Taylor” and became a sassy valley girl.

Calling it a “rape” is only a slight be hyperbolic. Unfortunately, that consumed the license for a dub for Region 1.

Eventually someone (else ?) brought Card Captor Sakura out as a sub, in its original version. That’s what I bought and watched. There’s no dub of the original in Region 1 and there never will be. You watch it subbed or you don’t watch it at all.

As to “Card Captors”, avoid it like the plague.

  8. Another thing: The CCS movie is both subbed and dubbed. It isn’t re-edited. But the dubbed version is as consistent as they could make it to “Card Captors” and as such the dialogue is so different as to make it a different story. I haven’t seen “Card Captors” but I watched the first movie with both sound tracks, and the dub is drastically inferior.

  9. Dan says:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Heros in a half shell ! TURTLE POWER !

Now thats a real theme song

    (Big O garbage)

I’m not a fan of subs, but I’m even less of a fan of hack work. Thanks for the warning. I’ll make sure to get the sub if I re-visit the series.
