A few days ago Steven posted a picture of where he lives, as seen from Google Earth. I was playing around with GE last night, and took the following:
Which is of my former condo in Amesbury, near Boston. I lived there back in 2000. This is what it looks like from about 2500ft. I lived under the red dot. Now here is my current house, taken at the same elevation:
But I’m from a part of the country nobody cares about, so the images are so low-res that you can’t see anything useful. I’d put a red dot there, but I can hardly tell what I’m looking at. My neighbor and I share a pixel for crying out loud.
To get any sort of meaningful detail…
…I have to go to an elevation of eleven miles. When Google Earth was new I figured they were still working on it, but it’s been ages and I now strongly suspect these are the most detailed pics they have available. So sad.
Heading south, I eventually get close enough to Pittsburgh and run into the border where it shifts to high detail.
Disappointing.
Batman: Arkham Origins
A breakdown of how this game faltered when the franchise was given to a different studio.
The Best of 2017
My picks for what was important, awesome, or worth talking about in 2017.
Project Octant
A programming project where I set out to make a Minecraft-style world so I can experiment with Octree data.
Blistering Stupidity of Fallout 3
Yeah, this game is a classic. But the story is idiotic, incoherent, thematically confused, and patronizing.
Playstation 3
What was the problem with the Playstation 3 hardware and why did Sony build it that way?
Maybe you’d have better luck finding your current residence using this one.
That last photo looks like a changewind rolling into Pittsburgh. Which might not be a bad thing. ;)
I thought it was kind of reassuring that they don’t really have the ability to see us yet.
I feel like i’m in a sanctuary, safe from prying eyes and unnoticed. Not that I am paranoid.
I hear that if you line your hat with tin foil, they can’t detect you.
Mom
Well… If I remember correctly about Google earth it looks like that in EVERYWHERE in Finland, where I live… Maybe capital was in Hi-Res? I don’t remember too clearly… But you can see lake which I live next to with google earth… That is, if you are lucky. :D
You probably have already seen this, but Google Earth also shows maps of the moon. I thought it would be cool if it showed any of the Apollo lunar landers. Keep drilling down closer and closer until it gets to the last screen – nice to know that someone out there has a sense of humor.
Wow! I didn’t know Amesbury was considered “On the map”?! Did you game at the toy soldier then?
