WordPress Plugin: Useless Stats

Useless Stats is a simple wordpress plugin that collects a bunch of general trivia about posting frequency and comment frequency. The current version is 1.21, which can be downloaded here. Just extract the file from the zip and place it into your /wp-content/plugins/ folder. Then just go to the plugins admin page and enable the plugin. All done. Enjoy.

Once Useless Stats is installed, a small summary of comment and posting data is displayed on the dashboard:

A more detailed collection of data can be found under the management tab in WordPress admin. This data provides charts that will show the number of comments per post by category and by day. It will show the breakdown of posting by day-of-week and by month, along with other data. An example of these charts can be seen here.

Finally, the plugin offers some HTML that you can cut & paste into your blog posts (or wherever else you like) so that you can show your data to others.

This plugin has not been tested with versions of WordPress before 2.0, and it is not known if it will work or not.

Suggestions or feedback welcome.

Thanks, I felt a bit put out the other day when you said “it’s a plugin I wrote” and kind of left it hanging there. I think it might also benefit from a “posts by days of the week” in addition to “comments by day of the week”.

    But it’s cool.

Sorry. I should have explained that I was still working on it. I’ll add posts by DOW next time around.

  3. Shamus says:

Ok, I’m working on a new version that shows how often you post on any particular day of the week, and it also displays a nice chart instead of raw percent. I’ll wait a bit longer to see if anyone else has any feedback or suggestions, and make the new one available some time tomorrow.

You have now atoned for giving me a seizure with all of your anti-hotlinking procedures!
(note: not actually indignant about having received a seizure at your hands).

What I want to do on my blog, is every few hours take the oldest post and move it to the
front of the queue, all automatically. Anyone know if there is a plugin that can do this or
a simple way to set up another plugin to do this (use my own feed perhaps)?
    Thanks.

  11. Thanx a lot! This is very useful.

Hey, boss! I love the plugin (it’s similar to something I used to have under Monaural Jerk, a feature called the Flake Rate, which I’d love to have back again but this comes close) but… under WP 2.3.1 I get this error:

WordPress database error: [Table 'gdwp2.wp_categories' doesn't exist]
    SELECT cat_ID, cat_name, category_count FROM wp_categories WHERE cat_ID > 0 ORDER BY cat_name

It doesn’t seem to be breaking anything, but…

  13. SM says:

Hi there, the plugin all seems to work fine for me, but I get an error at the top of the management page.

It says “Warning: max() [function.max]: Array must contain at least one element in /home/suburban/public_html/wp-content/plugins/useless_stats.php on line 193”.

Any idea how I correct this? Thanks!

  14. Manski says:

@SM The problem is (so it seems to me) that internal database layout of wordpress has changed. You can “hide” this warning by commenting out line 193 (just add two forward slashes “/” to the beginning of the line).

@Shamus Nice plugin. It would be nice if you were displaying the overall post count, too.

  15. After I initially commented I seem to have clicked on the -Notify me when new
comments are added- checkbox and now each time a comment is added I receive 4 emails with the same comment.
Perhaps there is a way you are able to remove me from that
    service? Appreciate it!
