There are things which are easy, and then there are things which are decidedly not easy:

I would classify this as the latter.

  2. SireCh says:

I especially like when he starts strumming with his forearm to do it faster

  3. chabuhi says:

I’ll avoid my usual cynicism and just say – cool!

  4. Julian says:

I’ve already seen this in the Escapist’s News Room, but it doesn’t cease to amaze and worry at the same time.

    Kickass song, too.

  5. Nyaz says:

    …Ergh-what? He did the… what… oh. Huh.

  6. Jiki says:

This kid should be out there finding cure for cancer or something instead. :>

  7. Small Ivory Knight says:

    Wow. Just Wow.

    I mean seriously. Wow.

  8. mlkjhgfds says:

Funny, that’s the third comment I see (same vid, different pages) bout how he “should be curing cancer or something”.

Yeah, I realize it’s mostly a joke but come on.

  9. Badger says:

No, he should be curing cancer AND AIDS, at the SAME TIME!

  10. Rutskarn says:

Bah! He should stop playing with his plastic toy and learn to play a REAL guitar while doing a Rubix cube at the same time.*

Seriously, that would be the best band schtick ever.

*This is a joke. A joke. A joke. A joke.

  11. Yar Kramer says:

It looks like somebody … *puts on sunglasses* has talent cubed.

    *star power* YEAHHHHHHH

  12. Vegedus says:

I’m glad he didn’t get a perfect score, or play on a harder song (all the long notes were great for working at the cubes). It’d be too nerdy otherwise. I gotta try playing with my elbow. Looks hard.

Also the “should be curing cancer” comments is the most failed logic ever. Anyone who has time to post on random blogs or make youtube videos should be curing cancer.

Anyone spending a long time on something nerdy should probably be building social skills instead, not curing cancer.

  13. Eddie says:

I am reminded of something my father used to say “Excessive skill at pool is a sign of a wasted childhood”. I mean, it’s a neat trick, and the kid may have a future doing up close sleight of hand magic, but other than that…

  14. As a classically trained pianist (and pipe organist), I found that playing Guitar Hero had a lot more in common with playing a keyboard than it did a guitar.

It’s a matter of learning a sequence of finger movements, just like on a piano. Once you’ve practiced the sequence enough times, it becomes muscle memory and you no longer have to think about it too hard – leaving you open to do other things, like solving Rubik’s Cubes.

I used to do goofy crap like that on the piano to entertain my friends when I was a kid. I think it’s awesome!

    Leslee

  15. [d20]Teldurn says:

That is incredibly impressive. I’m glad he was also missing some notes; proves he’s still human and not some cyborg programmed to solve Rubik’s cubes while playing Guitar Hero.

I’m not sure whether to classify it as a talent or a skill.

  16. Renacier says:

What’s really cool is that he’s got the same kind of chairs as me.
    We’re furniture buddies!

  17. Cuthalion says:

    That is amazing.

@Leslee, I think pretty much any instrument has the muscle-memory thing going. I do a little piano, used to do trombone, and do a lot of guitar, and all three allow you to basically get your body to memorize a sequence of movements so you can play without thinking about it.

But yes, I agree that playing guitar hero is more like using a keyboard than a fretboard.

  18. Daemian Lucifer says:

And he uses a mirror just to have a better camera angle! That just makes this ridiculous thing even harder!

  19. Mike says:

I can’t believe that he can do that and I am still trying to beat the game on easy difficulty. My coordination sucks

  20. Actually, solving Rubics Cube can be solved using a myriad of fairly automatic algorithm. That’s how people are able to solve it blind folded and in under a minute. It’s not that they are super-puzzle solving machines. They just memorized the sequence an go with it.

So while playing Guitar Hero and solving Rubics Cube looks hard, it is not really as difficult as you imagine. All it takes is some training.

That said, I suck at both of these activities, so I give the kid lots of credit for actually pulling it off. :)

  21. mixmastermind says:

Oh my God, it took me almost the whole video to realize he was playing that with lefty-flip on, by way of a mirror.

  22. radio_babylon says:

    hot water burn baby

  23. Daniel says:

I think that everybody is missing the main reason why this is not an incredible feat, and instead is a mediocre accomplishment at most.

He is playing Guitar Hero, and not the infinitely superior Rock Band.

(Ok, no matter what he is playing, and despite the fact that solving a Rubics cube is based on following the proper pattern, this kid has MASSIVE skills and multitasking ability)

  24. HeadHunter says:

Damn. I couldn’t do either of these things by themselves, let alone at the same time. I mean, I am an Expert player* but could never solve a Rubik’s Cube.

    *(on Medium)

  25. Neil Polenske says:

Holy crap! It’s McLovin!!! Truly, he lives up to his name.

  26. RPharazon says:

I never did manage to solve a Rubik’s Cube, but I had a friend a year ago who could complete one within 30 seconds. It was kind of freaky. He was also a deity at Guitar Hero, so I think he could do this feat with a little practice.

Me? I’ll stick to taping rulers to the strum bar and holding the guitar vertically. Playing the plastic instrument becomes much easier that way, and it helps me not lose as much muscle memory when I play Guitar Hero and need to switch to an actual cello within a week.

You see, the little fret buttons on the Guitar Hero/Rock Band controllers are entirely too small. The fifth button is where the fourth main note on a cello usually is (in terms of relative distance to the first finger). That means that my cello teacher can tell when I’ve been playing too many plastic instruments, simply by recognizing that my damn G sounds like an F.

I’ll get you one day, Harmonix and RedOctane!

  27. Entertaining. The cube is probably taking up less of his concentration.

  28. mark says:

I can solve a cube, making the cross on my own and using a list of algorythms for the rest, and i can play that song on expert (barely!), but thats just SICK.

  29. Jiki says:

It is nice how seriously people welcome jokes.

    Oh, wait!

  30. Zaghadka says:

If idle hands belong to the devil, that kid is the antichrist!

(Incidentally, does anyone know which Guitar Hero has Mr. Crowley in it? I want to go pick that one up.)

  31. HeadHunter says:

It’s on GH: World Tour. Along with Crazy Train.

  32. Zaxares says:

Very impressive, and it’s certainly something I could never do myself, but I found myself disappointed that he didn’t get 100% in the song. :P

  33. Deoxy says:

Pretty nifty. It’d be downright impressive if he did it in a song that didn’t have LOOOOoong parts where he could almost ignore it to work on the cubes instead. Like where most of the song was the crazy fast parts. Yes, then it would be freaking awesome.

    Still very nifty, mind you.

  34. Brickman says:

Completing two difficult tasks at once–that’s hard. Completing two difficult tasks at once, both of which were intended to be completed using two hands–that’s impressive.

  35. Rayen says:

okay, i have nothing against challenging yourself but this is ridiculous. What was the rubix cube or guitar hero not entertaining enough so you had to combine them? Well folks next step reached. Homo Superior has arrived, Xmen will be born in the next generation or so.

  36. Reverend Del says:

Latecomer to this one. I found myself bitching, in my mind, about how often he missed notes. Then a part of my brain that’s reasonable pointed out that the dude is playing with his elbow and a few missed notes are forgiveable considering he’s also solving two rubix cubes at the same damn time.

  37. Sir Vivor says:

Heh. That’s far more impressive than anything I can put on a resume.
