Lord of the Rings, Elrond, Rolepalyers, Legolas, Boromir

Even more reviled than a typical roleplayer is a roleplayer who insists on roleplaying. When the dorks need to feel superior, this is the guy they denounce as a dork. Honestly. The only person worse than him is the DM himself.

    “Son of Groin

    Brilliant.

  2. god. i cant stand how hilarious these are. Its funny because its true. This is like a monntage clip from every campaign I’ve ever played. And with me as every character, at some point or another.

  3. Heather says:

Heheheh. Too funny. I love this one.

  4. BeckoningChasm says:

Yeah, “son of Groin” had me going too, because it’s from a roleplayer and also because, you know, it’s true.

  5. bkw says:

    “Land of Krondor”

I see what you did there.

  6. Will says:

    I can see it now.

    DMotR:XXXIII
“I’m back in business guys, with a monstrous stat boost. But don’t you think Galdalf the White is kinda contrived? Call me Pug, or better yet, Milamber!”

  7. Ape says:

Betrayal @ krondor?? hehehe haven’t seen that punned before.
and yeah, son of groin got me too!!!

  8. Decado says:

Crap. I just choked and spit my coke all over the keyboard…

    “Gimli Son of Groin”

  9. Nicki-Joe says:

“Waiting for Tolstoy to finish…” Bah, ha, ha…been there. I can laugh about it now, but at the time I wanted to gnaw off my arm…

  10. Destroy Gundam says:

    243. Cannot cast haste on the king during a long winded speech to get him to hurry the hell up.

Of course, the only wizard in this group is the one speaking, so this is impossible, if the DM would even allow it.

  11. Justin Cray says:

Since this series is ending soon I am rereading all of the strips, and I can’t believe they still make me grin like an idiot.

    Simply legendary work Shamus.

  12. Chris says:

Dirkwood got me going, along with Gimli, son of Groin. Really funny stuff, Shamus. Great work.

  13. It’s been long enough since I read Bored of the Rings that I can’t recall for sure whether the “Groin” joke was made there.

  14. silentounce says:

Yes, it was Gimlet, Son of Groin in Bored of the Rings. Which, you know, was written just about 40 years ago.

Still, this is a great strip. I found it the other day and I’m reading it through from the beginning. Wonderful so far!

Thought the Krondor bit was a nice touch.

  15. Jvenn says:

Love the jab at roleplayers! We try to do some roleplay, but honestly, our group is really about getting together for the food…

  16. Capt_Poco says:

The best part about “son of Groin”? Tolkien actually had a son of Groin in his book. It was pronounced “Grow-in”. I shit you not.

  17. cheesebunny says:

*ahem!* I am an avid roleplayer, (many different charecters, but my fave 2 are shadow, a hunter/archer, shes generally covered in some kind of blood though so she dosnt make freinds to well, and anna d’luso, though she 40k mainly, also a mean tempered girl with a gun in her hands, much prefers a sword though, even if its only meant for ceremonial purposes) and Im alpha female in my hive so nya!
(actually Im just alpha, the guys arnt even worthy to roll, let alone role play)

    1. Lindan says:

This one is the best of the series so far.

Cheesebunny: never tell other people about your roleplaying characters. They never care and it always makes you look like a geeky loser.

      1. Aztook says:

i kind of find that rude, shamus has posted his and the other characters of his friends, and beside, people find the D&D stuff kind of geeky. just putting it out there that you might want to think before saying anything

        1. Supah_Ewok says:

I agree with you, but seeing as how we’re commenting on a two-year old post commenting on a two-year old post, I don’t really think that it matters…

          1. Duder NME says:

            Well, better late than never?

I can’t fathom why people would want to play a roleplaying game and yet NOT ROLEPLAY. Regardless, this strip is high-larious.

  18. ERROR says:

They should call Gandalf “the Wizard of Oz” sometime. Heh.

  19. wiilover432 says:

hilarious! “i was playing D&D before you got your first nintendo!” ha! Krondor? tehehe.

  20. ERROR says:

    Gandalf’s First Appearance~

“Oh, look! ‘Tis the Wizard of Oz!”

  21. micchan says:

Hey, there’s no need to laugh, we are all sons of groins!

  22. Ichneumon says:

And extra points for making the dwarf the roleplayer. Roleplayers gravitate to dwarves.

  23. jurnag12 says:

Son of groin, read this thing 50 times and still makes me chuckle.
Also, it’s logical since he roleplayed before we got our first Nintendo.
Because, seriously, who plays a nintendo these days, eh? EH?

  24. Aragorn says:

OMG, I never noticed this the other 5 times reading through this comic…. son of groin! LOL!

  25. Veneficus says:

“Even more reviled than a typical roleplayer is a roleplayer who insists on roleplaying.” Ain’t it the truth????

  26. Cressidia says:

My DM was kinda a prick… only gave xp if you roleplayed extensively. Then we all drowned in a sewer.

    1. ImThisObiWanKid says:

that sucks. however, i laughed when you said “Then we all drowned in a sewer” idk why it just struck me as funny

  27. Tryll says:

There I was, having lunch at my desk while innocently surfing the web, when I read “son of Groin”. Nearly choked on my sandwich!

  28. Tlc2012 says:

    Son of GROIN

    HOLY CRUD

    I CAN’T STOP LAUGHING

    1. Kaiman says:

Aren’t we all sons/daughters of groin?

  29. AferVentus says:

Krondor! Kudos to you, good sir.

  30. Unorus Janco says:

Krondor? Heh, that’s actually pretty clever.

  31. cernael says:

    http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Gr%C3%B3in

You may laugh, but Gróin is in fact a canon dwarf name. Gimli’s grandfather, to be precise.

  32. Snowglowsblue says:

Fun fact: Gimli’s grandfather actually is named Gróin.

  33. 4ier says:

There’s a messed up character encoding in the comments.
cernael and Snowglowsblue both have Gróin, which should be Gróin.

  34. Justin Swinehart says:

16 years and several read-throughs later, and this is still hilarious.
