Ten Years Ago Today

January 25, 1997. A really good day.

Ten years and three children later, I’d say this was about the best move I ever made. I was nervous at the start of things. We are both more or less surrounded by friends and a few family members who are divorced or otherwise coping with failed marriages. I’d heard about all the troubles that hit married people as they “get tired of each other” and “get bored of the relationship”. I’d heard of the seven year itch. In the back of my mind I thought it was going to be this tough fight to hold the marriage together. These warnings built up in my mind, and I guess I thought being married would be this burden that would overshadow our feelings for each other.

Of course, it was nothing like that at all. I don’t pretend to be a better person than those who have divorced, but I never saw any of the stuff I was warned about. The following is a cliché, but true: I’m even more in love with my wife today than I was in 1997. I’m crazy about her. I still think she’s beautiful. I still love having her around. I still love to make her laugh.

And she still laughs at my jokes. She still makes a fuss over even the smallest gift. She still looks for excuses to get me gifts. She’s still a source of inspiration and encouragement.

Ten years of married life is a good start.

I know exactly how you feel, my wife & I have been gifted with 13 years together so far, with many more yet to come.

Of course the fact that I married mt best friend helps with our longevity.

It sounds like you did the same. Congratz!

Always good for a young single guy to hear success stories like this.

If your readers click on Heather’s site they will see the wedding party from that day. Next to the groom is his brother/best man who has recently become engaged. The Geek Gene(they got it from their dad) runs strong in him. Wedding date? Septmber 22!

As a guy in his late 20’s who is _juuuuuuuuuuuuuust_ about ready to pop the question, it is heartwarming to hear things like this.

My wife and I have nearly been married for 4 years – I hope in 6 years we can be as happy as you guys are!

Happy anniversary and congratulations! Here’s wishing you many more happy years together!

My wife and I have been married 14 years as of last October (we got married the day after my 19th birthday), and it always makes me happy to find other couples who are happy together.

Congratulations. Nice to see. I am at 7 years, 3 (and a half, shhhh, I’m not supposed to tell any one yet) kids. I love my wife dearly, and am amazed how she puts up with me.

  16. bkw says:

    Happy anniversary!

Tomorrow is the 11 year anniversary of when my wife and I started dating, although we’ve been married for only 6.5 years.

Reading the replies in this thread I’m glad to see anecdotal evidence that there are, indeed, many happy marriages out there. Sometimes you gotta wonder …

  17. Thufir says:

whose that strapping young lad in the photo?

  18. Ryan says:

Congratulations, happy anniversary! My wife and I are at six years. It’s been the best six years of my life (and I think hers, too).

  19. Rustybadger says:

Congratuations! We’re almost at 15, and I can tell you unequivocably that it keeps getting better. God Bless!

  20. Dave says:

I’ve been married 6.5 years… sure.. I’m happy.. have two kids… but you forgot the part about the work it is. She makes a big, happy deal about a little thing? Well.. you made the effort to do the little thing.. It’s like.. oh… Tang… add the water.. stir.. things are fine.. but let it just sit there and it gets kinda funky. Ya gotta keep stirring.

Hmm.. tang.. sorry.. I must be thirsty.. or thinkin’ of astronauts.

  21. Julia says:

We’re past 15, heading for 16. 3 kids. Some heartaches, some ups and downs, but I wouldn’t trade being married to him for anything.

  22. Lyz says:

YAAAAAAAAAAY! Congratulations! (and to all the other happy married people, too! EVERYONE should be (happily) married!)

We’re at 4 1/2 years and two kids and the hardest thing right now is not being able to see each other because we both work and I refuse to send my kids to daycare, so I get, like, 15 minutes to talk to my best friend more days than not. …. SUCKS. But it was fun celebrating 5 years since the day we met this month! It’s so weird. I can hardly remember my life before that, now.

  23. Covert The Elder says:

Having read that you have been married forever AND you’re basically a shut in, I’m picking up a really strong “Your wife is Kathy Bates from the movie ‘Misery’ and you just can’t get away” vibe.

    Ok…Pat made me say that.

Congrats from another veteran from the “married with a horde of children” wars.

To quote Shamus: “I still think she's beautiful. I still love having her around. I still love to make her laugh.

And she still laughs at my jokes. She still makes a fuss over even the smallest gift. She still looks for excuses to get me gifts. She's still a source of inspiration and encouragement.”

That’s why it works. Congratulations, and many more, however late I may be!
