          1. Daemian Lucifer says:

Wouldnt I be saying only lucifer then?

            1. Reach says:

What you haven’t considered is chime

          2. X2-Eliah says:

            Chime. Chime chime!

          3. Jarenth says:

Corollary: Chime turns you into this Pokemon.

    2. Jeremiah says:

      Enchantment?

      Wait, wrong game.

      1. X2-Eliah says:

      2. Axle says:

        Enchimetment!!

    3. NotYetMeasured says:

      Malkovich?

  2. Andy_Panthro says:

    I don’t get it.

  3. Heron says:

Is it too obvious to point out that I knew a majority of the comments would simply be variations of “Chime”?

Note to self: next time you promise the wife “I won’t buy any games this month”, take a month-long break from all things Shamus. Addendum: find $5 on the street so you can buy Chime.

    1. Aulayan says:

Sir, you don’t need to get five dollars off the street. You just need to show your wife this game.

My wife, after just watching a demo on youtube, now wants it.

  4. Matt K says:

I honestly wish they had a demo. Sounds neat but I’d really love to check out the game play before buying.

    1. Moriarty says:

the tutorial video gives a pretty good idea how the game plays:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGNedkVWrdA

E: aw heck, I’ll just leave all three official videos here:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=occXkoV3KWg

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qryWkZptZPU

the game feels really great and the songs are pretty neat, but unfortunately there’s only six of them.
On the other hand, you can’t expect a guitar hero playlist in a game for only four bucks.

      1. Nick says:

I presume it makes sense with audio? I just watched it without audio and I have NFI what this game is about, it just looks like random Tetris.

    2. Nick Bell says:

Because it is an XBLA game, the 360 version of Chime has a demo, if you’ve got that console available to you.

    3. Mertseger says:

Chime is $5 on Steam. I can understand and sympathesize if you are on a budget, but I’ve probably bought a couple dozen AAA titles since the 80’s that I’ve played for less than 6 hours for $30 to $60. If you’ve got the means and like tetris-like games, forgo a couple Starbucks and buy Chime.

  5. ZzzzSleep says:

This reminds me of the Neil Gaiman short story “Virus”….

  6. Irridium says:

Glad to see everyone chiming in.

    1. Veloxyll says:

It’s about chime Shamus mentioned this

      1. Teldurn says:

This game looks so potentially addictive, it should be a chime punishable only by solitary confinement.

        1. Bit says:

But it’s such a subchime game, it should be a chime to restrict it!

      2. Galenor says:

I love it when people use words that chime with the original one as a pun!

  7. Sam says:

Methinks thou enjoyeth thee game beknownst to alle men ande womyn as Chyme.

  8. Chargone says:

So, i hrd u lik Chime?

    or something….

    Chime!

  9. Zanfib says:

When you are finished with chime, go to steam and download the demo for Reccatear: an Item Shop’s Tale.

    Capitalism, Ho!

    1. Mumbles says:

Hell the fucking yes. I’m on my second loop of that game (and I’m doing endless on the side).

      1. Veloxyll says:

But when will he have the chime to play it? What, with Civ 5 out in 9 days.

That said, Recettear is a really fun game. Am also on my second playthough, though I don’t have an endless game on the side. My only complaint is that more high level stuff could drop in the later dungeons. Cause on level 22 of the 2nd dungeon I don’t really have much use for basic clothes any more.

        1. Mumbles says:

Oh man Civ 5. Everyone from Spoiler Warning (including Randy) is pumped for that game. Although, I still haven’t decided if I’m going to get the special edition or not.

My brother and I invented an iron mode of Recettear where you can’t use adventurers at all. Although, honestly, I think the game is easier without them. You should consider trying it if you get tired of dungeon crawling.

          1. Veloxyll says:

It wouldn’t surprise me if half the internet was pumped for Civ 5! I already suspect we’ll get a post when the next Spoiler Warning is supposed to go up that just reads “One. More. Turn.”

I probably won’t get the special edition personally. Maybe if they offered a TF2 hat… but since I haven’t heard the soundtrack it doesn’t lure me in. No doubt this will be something I regret, oh well. Plus I usually play as the Egyptians so an extra civ doesn’t appeal that much.

Hmm, Shopper only mode sounds interesting for Recettear, I might try it when I next play. Assuming Dragon Quest, Phoenix Wright, Metal Gear and durping around on WoW’s PTR don’t consume all my time till Civ V comes out that is.

            1. Chargone says:

Recettear (not racketeer ^_^) is Awesome! i bought it…errr… day before yesterday? played it ALL DAY!

things are definitely easier if you ignore the adventurers except as customers, at least at the lower levels…

though, every time i get to a level of debt payment i haven’t reached before, i fail and have to go live in a box -_-*

got to the point where in the last couple of days, if i know i’ll fail, i just buy up heaps of stock (it carries over.) what this means is that the Second time i always get past :D

also, Civ 5’s ‘steam only’ thing kinda killed it for me a long time ago. somehow, i just can’t get hyped over it. …

…. i can just imagine the various online shop owners going ‘Glee! i sold a Recettear for XX dollars!’ *laughs* it’s silly.

(edit: also, ‘silver’ doesn’t count as a metal <_<)

        2. Irridium says:

Oh yeah, Civ 5 comes out next week.

Shame, I wanted to do stuff during the next few months.

      2. Gale says:

The game could stand to be a little more transparent in how the items are categorised (what the hell is a “metal item”, and why ask for “accessories” if you’re only going to accept things that hang around your neck?) And it easily become impossible to make the debt repayments, if the economy goes into a slump – loop 1 ended for me when I couldn’t make the 200,000 payment, because there was a massive recession and I couldn’t make any money out of my stores of weapons, armour, or food. But that doesn’t change the fact that I’ve put 20 hours into that damn game since I bought it on day 1, and I’m still not even slightly of tired of it.

Who are people using most as adventurers? I’m nearing level sixty with the archer girl, while everyone else is lazing around level 25.

Anyone know if you can unlock Arma as an adventurer? I’m guessing I would’ve gotten further with her had I not exploited her so much for massive profits. She’s nearly as easy as the rich girl.

        1. Jarenth says:

          Here’s a different gripe I’ve been having:

When people come into the store and ask “Do you have a [whatever]?“, and I don’t actually have a [whatever], I can’t just tell them no. No, sorry, I don’t carry that. Instead, I have to select something unrelated, hear the customer whine, then hear Recette go into self-doubt mode again (“Am I really that untalented?…“). It really gets on my nerves.

I would also like to have a “No, I don’t want to buy your Thankful Statue, I have like seven of them and they never sell, I’m running a shop not a goddamned charity!” button.

          1. Gale says:

Actually, there’s a [Nothing] option at the top of each category. She’ll say something like “Sorry, we’re a little understocked on that at the moment” and then go into self-doubt mode.

I hear your second point, though. The rich girl has sold me at least a dozen Unthankful Statues at this point. I’ve no idea where she picks up so many of them.

    2. Jarenth says:

Reccetear deserves all praise it gets and more.

      Forward to yayness!

      1. Gale says:

“Miss Recette! Please sell things at me!” Is probably my favourite line from any game ever.

  10. Josh R says:

I still think you should check out VVVVVV, good music and the best platforming I’ve played since braid.

    1. Ian says:

My biggest gripe about VVVVVV is that some of the jumps require pixel-perfect precision. I definitely wouldn’t say that it wins any “best platforming” awards by a long shot, but it’s still a very fun game. Very retro, too.

      1. Simon Buchan says:

Did you go for a 20-trinket run yet? Cause there’s one jump in specific that took me probably an hour to do, literally even. “Your tears, they are delicious” indeed. And “… Not what I do” killed me 470 times the first run. That said, repeat runs show that this is a game you get *way* better at. Still no idea how you’re supposed to do a 100-death run, let alone a 0 death run.

        1. Daemian Lucifer says:

Oh yes,the veni vidi vichi trinket was hard.Lucky for me (sort of) I played I wanna be the guy some time ago,so I have no frustration left in me.

  11. Nekokirin says:

After I read your thoughts on Chime over twitter I’ve been playing a lot and am totally hooked. I want some more levels to be obsessed with but the 5 standard ones are so good i don’t really mibd lol.

  12. X2-Eliah says:

On a more serious note, these addictive games really are dangerous. Whenever you have an assignment/work/task to do in a chimely manner, it is all too easy to just forget about it and lose yourself in such games.

It, basically, is escapism at its purest form. The rapid-paced gameplay that requires most of your senses chimes perfectly with the innate desire to not think about pressing matters and forget the burden of responsibility.

Okay, anywho, as long as Shamus (or the rest of the crew) puts up the spoiler warnings on chime, I can’t complain.

    1. Veloxyll says:

It’s games like this that separate people with good chime management from those without. The only methods I’ve had the slightest bit of success with when faced with such addictive and chime consuming games is to use them as a reward, so you finish the task at hand, then you’re free to spend your chime playing the game.

Though I must say this method isn’t totally successful all the chime, it at least gives a chance of completing tasks in a reasonable chimeframe.

  13. Volkhov says:

It goes on forever””and””oh my God””it’s full of chimes!

  14. Kdansky says:

Great, I now have Chime, VVVVVV and Recettear Demos in my Steam. I so hate you guys for destroying my free chim-TIME, I mean! Curses!

Also “Chicken!” was what I first thought of when I saw the posts. Sadly, someone else was faster.

  15. Fred says:

    Chime.
    Chimer.
    Chimest!
    Chimershist!!

  16. Ingvar M says:

Chime, chimeny, chime chimeny, chime chime cheroot?

  17. mumakil says:

    chime? CHIME? CHIIIIIMEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

  18. John says:

Hmm, if it was available on the PC (without Steam) or the iPhone I would totally get that for my wife.

  19. somecrazyfan says:

    Chimney!

  20. Aldowyn says:

    Chimetastic!

I have no clue why, but this one was hilarious.

… and someone mentioned Civ V and I seriously want to get it now. I haven’t gotten any new games since ME2, its kind of depressing… I guess I should get a job first, huh?

  21. NickR says:

A long time ago I bought luminies on my psp. Then my girlfriend found it and I never saw my psp again.

So then I get chime for my xbox. Next thing I know my xbox has been annexed.

Finally I think, ok I’ll get chime on my PC so at least I can get play it (in between all the starcraft 2 games). You know what happened? My PC has now been taken over because “The xbox version doesn’t have the portal song.”

    Gaaah.

  22. Ambience 327 says:

    I guess it’s time I chimed in here…

    1. SolkaTruesilver says:

I chime what you chimed there

      1. Jarenth says:

I’ll see your chime, and I’ll raise you five chimes and one chime.

        Chime thà¡t!

        1. SolkaTruesilver says:

          Chime you.

I just can’t chime that chime.

          1. Jarenth says:

            Haha, CHIME!

Oh man, I’m chiming in the chime right now. This is the chimest day EVER!

            1. SolkaTruesilver says:

All right, I chime-up. I hope you chime in your chime.

Never chime to me ever a-chime.

  23. RedClyde says:

I wish it had more songs.

What’s your favorite? I really like Silence.

  24. Dragomok says:

As Shamus mentioned a while ago this blog has turned in the past into Mass Effect II blog and Fable II blog. It was also GalCiv blog, Oblivion blog and Jade Empire blog so I guess it won’t be a big deal if it will be Chime blog for a while.

It’s not like, one day some strange luminating set of squares will jump out of our screens and say:

Every person I met, I assimilated! Resistance is futile. All your base are belongs to chime. The looser is yoouuu! Have a fantastic day!

    …No, that totally won’t happen.

    1. X2-Eliah says:

Unfortunately, when looking back, there were more ‘interesting’ articles (well, like this mordin solus thingie) and less fillers (like this chime thingie).

      1. SolkaTruesilver says:

Since all that stuff is free in the first place, I don’t think we gain much by criticising the quality of the posts Shamus made out of his own free time. He will keep going anyway, happily so.

  25. Dragomok says:

Oh, sorry, it seems I accidentally double-posted.

  26. Chargone says:

i would just like to note that this thread is made of Chime and awesome <_<

    ^_^

    1. X2-Eliah says:

      Chime-five!

  27. Hitch says:

Curse you Shamus Young! Chime is eating my life now.

  28. Jarenth says:

Question: is it bad that after being exposed to Chime for a week, the first thing revisiting this comic that comes to my mind is “Man, I would have totally rotated that C-block in row four, picture three!

    1. Shamus says:

When I was making the comic I needed to round up some quick screenshots of each level. I’d planned to just slap things down and make it look like a mid-game board as quickly as possible. I’d do this for the first few seconds but pretty soon I’d end up doing what you did: Seeing the bad moves and trying to fix them by playing in earnest.

      Ahhh! Stop!

      1. Jarenth says:

Haha! I am an agent of chaos!

  29. Maureen says:

Thank you for posting about Chime. It’s a decent little game, and of course there’s always room for cake. Not really addictive, though. I mean, you can play some match 3 game for hours, whereas this tires out your hand in only 45 minutes or so. The rules are pretty cryptic also. (Well, unless you read the manual.)

What I don’t understand is why they’re not telling casual game fans about Chime, when it’s essentially a casual game. I mean, Granny’s money for charity is as good as anybody else’s. Sometimes the gaming industry gets very clannish, and this seems to be one of those times.
